Hyperdontia

Hyperdontia is the development of supernumerary teeth. The presence of excess teeth is usually caused by a hyperactivity of the dental lamina. The shape of the affected teeth can also be altered (peg-shaped). Hyperdontia is more common in men and in permanent dentition. In 90% of the cases, the supernumerary teeth are found in the maxilla. Less than 1% of the population have more than 3 supernumerary teeth. Multiple supernumerary teeth are often associated to syndromes. In other words, hyperdontia is when there are more than 32 permenent teeth or 20 deciduous teeth.
